Over the weekend Sean and I took Killian to a pumpkin patch and farm. It was very crowded and unfortunately not very impressive. But we managed to find some awesome pumpkins and see a Zebu. We have a Veggie Tales cd and one of the songs is about Zebus. The lines for everything we terribly long and people were not the most gracious. So we decided to eat some lunch and focus on finding pumpkins. Killian wanted every pumpkin that was ugly. And I mean ugly! The more warty things it had on it the better. If it couldn't stay up straight, if it looked on the verge of rotting, thats what she wanted. We were able to talk her out of the nasty pumpkins and got some great carving ones. We had to get a Kiki pumpkin, a mommy pumpkin and a daddy pumpkin. As we were in line to pay a girl behind us had 2 tiny pumpkins so Sean had to run into the barn to get Killian some.

We carved the pumpkins the next day and made some pumpkin seeds. Killian really did not enjoy pulling the guts out. Mom and Dad got to pull everything out of the pumpkin and she would use a spoon to try to get some of the seeds. Once they were cleaned out we let her design her face. While Sean was carving them we painted some of the small pumpkins.

I think by this point she was done with pictures.

She loves looking at all of our pumpkins on the front steps. We'll just have to see how she handles it when we throw them all away!
At the risk of sounding ignorant...what a Zebu?
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures! I love this time of year. Paula - I think I like your pumpkin the best, it looks like it's yawning and (ayyyyyhhhhhhhhh) that's how I feel!
You are definitely not ignorant Erin. I had no clue what one was prior to hearing it in the song and Killian wanting to know what it is. According to Wikipedia (and confirmed when seen up close) a "Zebu is sometimes known as humped cattle, indicus cattle, or brahmin cattle are a type of domestic cattle originating in South Asia (the Indian subcontinent). They are characterised by a fatty hump on their shoulders, drooping ears and a large dewlap. They are highly adapted to high temperatures, and are farmed throughout the tropical countries, both as pure zebu and as hybrids with taurine cattle, the other main type of domestic cattle. Zebu are used as draught oxen, as dairy cattle and as beef cattle, as well as for byproducts such as hides and dung for fuel and manure."
